"Truth or Dare" Movie Review

The game Truth or Dare might seem too simple to craft a whole horror film premise around. However, the movie Truth or Dare alludes to interesting and relatively unexplored concepts in horror.

Six friends are lured to an abandoned mission chapel by a young stranger when on a spring break trip to Mexico. There, they play a game of Truth or Dare that follows the group of friends home in a deadly way. They must play the possessed game while trying to figure out how to beat it before they all are dead.

Possessed game? Yes, this is one of those interesting concepts I had mentioned. We've seen plenty of movies where board games are haunted by demonic spirits. But the idea of possessing a non-tangible game is clever. However, this interesting concept is framed with cheesy jump scares and formulaic plot development, devaluing the premise and missing the opportunity to speak more to the participants' "true" or deeper characters.

But faced with the threat of a cheesy and cliched ending, Truth or Dare takes a unique and thought-provoking turn at the end. So, truth or dare? Truth: this isn't the best horror movie in the world, but it'll do.
