Short Film Spotlight: "Fevah"
Directed by Randall Dottin. Starring Melissa Jackson, Russell Hornsby, LaRoyce Hawkins
——
“It’s not fever, it’s ‘fevah’”; a distinction made by Indira as she teases and playfully tussles with her child’s father, Jelani. But just as he gets down on a knee and proposes to her, Indira snaps back out of the memory.
It’s a brief moment of reflection for her in the short film Fevah when Jelani returns after completely disappearing from her life for 18 months. She’s now raising their child and building a new relationship, but her estranged relationship with Jelani is a constant distraction that she has to address sooner rather than later.
Fevah has a runtime of about 12 minutes, and the short packs significant doses of emotion into every moment it has to tell this story. Melissa Jackson plays Indira, and as her character navigates the ups and downs of life and her past relationship, Jackson hits each emotional tone perfectly helping the story build to a compelling conclusion.
But what makes Fevah so alluring for me is the element of mystery incorporated into the narrative. A somber score maintains the sense of tension as viewers try to decipher where the narrative is going. And questionable actions in scenes are left lingering until the right moment reveals a new level of understanding for the plot.
It all amounts to an intriguing and engaging premise for a short film as viewers take the journey with Indira to learn what to hold close and when she’s holding something too close.
