"Call Me By Your Name" Movie Review
"Later" is how Oliver, played by Armie Hammer, typically exits conversations in the film Call Me By Your Name. It comes off "arrogant" to his eventual love interest, 17 year old Elio, but it's also somewhat of a signature for this character, and there's something to both admire and dislike about the habit. The same can be said for Call Me By Your Name as a film.
When Oliver, a handsome 24 year old graduate student, visits to intern temporarily under Elio's father, he and Elio, played by Timothee Chalamet, share a close friendship which eventually blossoms into a secret love affair that sadly can't last after Oliver's internship.
The chemistry between Hammer and Chalamet is captivating. The way they dance through conversation with each other is exceptional, especially as their characters get to know each other more and their affection unfolds.
The movie, however, is overlong, with many scenes serving small purposes that could've been communicated in conjunction with other plot points. It's a dry type of entertainment, and I feel this movie will primarily appeal to those who fantasize about young love in a foreign land; a theme too narrow in scope for the extraordinary talent involved.
