"A Star Is Born" Movie Review
“If you don’t dig deep in your soul, you won’t have legs.”
That’s what Jack (Bradley Cooper) says to Ally (Lady Gaga) on her way up to stardom. He goes on to explain that the spotlight can be fleeting, and this is her time to say something meaningful with her talent.
Jack becomes Ally’s mentor and lover after discovering her at a small bar and eventually bringing her on tour with him. But, he struggles with alcoholism and drug abuse. Cooper, who demonstrates significant charm and impressive vocals, effectively portrays this character that swings between stubborn entertainer, passionate lover, and deteriorating drunk.
It’s Lady Gaga, however, who’s the showstopper here. Gaga is not unfamiliar with the spotlight, as the successful real life pop star seems to mirror the life of her character, but her raw and genuine performance is magnificent. In every scene and every song, Gaga is a force to be reckoned with.
Both stars dig deep in their souls to offer the best of their talents to A Star Is Born, making the most of the spotlight they’re given. That is what pushes this film to greatness and gives it the proverbial legs Jack wishes for Ally’s career.
