"Anthem of a Teenage Prophet" Movie Review
Cameron Monaghan played Lucas Hunter, your average teenager in a small town. But his average life is turned upside down when he’s recorded predicting the death of his best friend. When his vision comes true exactly as he described, Lucas struggles to deal with the implications of his gift on top of the everyday challenges of being a teen.
It would’ve been easy to push this kind of premise into supernatural territory, but director Robyn Hays in her directorial debut keeps the film grounded in reality and believability. Monaghan, after all, gives a solid and captivating performance, as does Peyton List playing his love interest, Faith.
Unfortunately, the Teenage Prophet’s entertainment value lulls leading into the third act as the focus of the story deviates from Lucas’ visions and drifts in the aftermath of these events. This is the segment when the film highlights Lucas’ life as a teen, but his coming of age struggle doesn’t ever reach the same remarkable, revealing, or insightful capacity as his gift of foresight.
Regardless, Teenage Prophet is a successful display of great talent and potential.
