"Love, Simon" Movie Review

In recent years, indie film has elevated gay representation in cinema with Oscar-winning movies like Brokeback MountainMoonlight, and Call Me By Your Name. But what about in the mainstream?

This is where Love, Simon comes in, but it's not a movie I'm going to rave about simply because it features gay themes. It's a movie that swings effortlessly between laughs, tears, and cheers as it brings the struggles of coming out in a modern era to practical terms on the big screen.

It's true that Love, Simon hits many of the familiar beats of a standard teen romance. But, supported by an incredibly talented cast led by a formidable yet vulnerable Nick Robinson playing Simon, this film tugs hard on the heartstrings of those who have had to face the challenge of coming out, and the emotional payoff is tremendous. Additionally, it opens the opportunity for the discussions to be had within families and social circles about identity and being true to one's self.

In the film's conclusion, Simon's peers cheered for him and his attempt to find love. Similarly, I'm cheering for this movie to make waves with audiences, and make a lasting impression on the filmmaking industry.
