"mother!" Movie Review

While Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem are now recognized as headlining actors, both have also proven their value in small scale films in the past. So, when the two are brought together to star in a Darren Aronofsky film, you would think it's worth a look, right?

Well...don't jump to conclusions so quickly.

The thing that makes art worthwhile for the viewer is a comprehensive understanding of what the artist is trying to convey. Aronofsky seems to have a point to make in mother!, however, the point is fumbled is a cluster of disturbing chaos. The third act reduces an otherwise curiously mysterious film to an indiscernible mess of infuriating imagery.

It's interesting because, typically, characters are meant to be relatable and easy to connect with, but Lawrence, Bardem, and surprise guests are tasked in mother! to be as unrealistic as possible. With such a bizarre take on storytelling, mother! belongs solely to independent cinema and a much earlier point in all of these actors' careers.

I can personally say that I liked mother! more than I didn't like it. The title for the most is part irrelevant, but the exclamation point, for better or worse, is quite the understatement.
