“Rise Of Skywalker” Is The Fall of the Saga

ForReel Score: 4/12 | 1.5 Stars

Oof. And I thought The Last Jedi was bad. The finale of the Skywalker saga goes out with a thud and not a bang. The result of a narrative tug of war between Directors Rian Johnson & JJ Abrams doomed the film while only proving that Disney/Lucasfilm had almost no plan for this trilogy when they started it.

I'm about to go on a serious tirade so let's get the good out of the way right now. John Williams' musical score once again is a bright spot for the franchise. I also think Daisy Ridley has become progressively better in each film peaking here. The rest of the cast, not so much. Some of the visuals looked rushed - perhaps due to working against the clock as some pre-release articles pointed out. Narratively, this film is a disaster zone - relying solely on fan service while retconning many parts of the Last Jedi. Ironically, Rise of Skywalker attempts to Last Jedi.... the Last Jedi. It also goes out of it's way to nullify key moments from Return of the Jedi.

This could be the worst Star Wars film to date and shakes my faith in what Disney/LucasFilm can do for the future of the franchise. Then again, at least we have the Mandalorian to give us some hope.
