Streaming services have become the new era of television entertainment. Platforms with endless content, little-to-no commercials, and modeled generally for binge-watching. Love Is Dead! however utilizes an old-fashion style of television entertainment to convey its narrative, but adds a bizarre spin.

Through a collection of 80's sitcom-styled episodes, Love Is Dead! weaves multiple narratives together. The bizarre spin: uncensored profanity, deplorable moral values, and taboo subjects; content that could never have aired during the era the film represents. It features a mix of characters with psychological states ranging from helpless to abhorrent, but viewers will find that what binds all of them together are their failures in love.

What works for Love Is Dead! is how well it captures the 80’s sitcom style. From it's multi-camera filming setup, to the stage-play dialogue, and performances to the live studio audience. The production’s aesthetic feels authentic.

The thing about this dark comedy, however, is that it’s light on the “comedy”. Laugh-track reactions boom with hysterical guffaws at taboo topics and unsavory actions, but I found very little of the film to be genuinely comical. It’s possible this is just not my type of comedy, but the good news is even if that doesn’t appeal to you, there’s plenty of drama to compensate and keep the narrative interesting.

For audiences that can tolerate the characters’ intolerable actions and motivations, Love Is Dead! is an intricate, albeit nutty and wild, experience. Need a break from modern programming? Give Love Is Dead! a shot.
