SIFF 2019: "We Take The Low Road" Review + Q&A Session W/ Jerry Spears, Domenic Barbero, and Amanda Viola

We Take The Low Road runs with the fairly believable idea that the healthcare system is corrupt. The problem though is the project can’t decide what direction to run in.

We Take The Low Road takes place after it’s revealed that collusion between the medical industry and politicians has been the cause of unreasonably high healthcare costs. This news in conjunction with the passing of a loved one because of the collusion prompts a trio to plot the assassination of one of the figureheads responsible.

It’s a premise with a lot of promise, but the final product lacks a clear direction. Sometimes, We Take The Low Road is a thriller. Sometimes it’s a comedy. But most of the time, it’s a road trip drama while the characters reflect and contemplate the morality of what they’ve done. Rarely is it a cohesive blend of these.

The film does, however, feature an extremely likable and dynamic cast. Rich Morris, Brian Sutherland, and Amanda Viola play Mason, Thompson, and Bobbi, the leading trio. These three maintain a high level of authenticity with their characters and chemistry with each other, even when the script isn’t at its best. Because of that, there is certainly fun and entertainment to be had with We Take The Low Road.

The film’s soul seems rooted in the filmmakers’ own fantasy of exacting revenge against an industry with seemingly unfair practices. It’s great that they’ve executed the concept in an entertaining film rather than having actually executing someone.
