Entertainment News Recap | Tim’s Top 5 Stories of the week | NOV 16-22

Last weeks’ recap featured a WW84 update and surprise suprise we got another one this week. We also have the continuation of online cancel culture, more streaming releases, and upcoming films. Let’s take a look at what happened this week.

1. #FireGinaCarano trends as Twitter mob attempts to cancel star for right-leaning tweets.

Christian Toto, an award winning conservative film critic, who has covered Hollywood for 20 years has a piece over on his site HollywoodInToto (HiT) detailing seven reasons why the Gina Carano fight is a fight for all of us who actually believe in free expression even when we disagree with the person espousing those viewpoints. You can read his seven prescient points in the source link below.

Opinion: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Cancel Culture is a sign of immaturity among the mob - not that any mob is mature. No one should be fired for not having the “right” beliefs. Polling tends to show that outside of Twitter most of us agree on that. Unfortuanately, business has increasingly forgotten that Twitter isn’t the real world. Thanks to that, it’s time to counter with #IStandWithGinaCarano.

2. WW84 confirms mini Christmas release & then HBO Max

Wonder Woman 1984, will begin it’s international release on December 16 before opening where theaters are open Christmas Day domestically. The film will simultaneously release on HBO Max just in case you would rather enjoy the film from the comfort of your home.

Opinion: I have been stoked and waiting for Wonder Woman 1984 the sequel to arguably the best DC film to date. I’ve also stated consistently that at a certain point it doesn’t make sense to continue to push back all of these films. I’m happy a blockbuster tent pole film has decided to maintain a release date.

3. Coming 2 America sequel will premiere in March on Amazon Prime

First reported by ScreenCrush in October but now confirmed Coming 2 America sequel was purchased by Amazon Prime Video. The anticipated sequel was penned by original writers David Sheffield and Barry W. Blaustein with newcomer Kenya Barris creator of Black-ish. It will now be released March 5, 2021.

Opinion: I know I sound like a broken record but yet another film heading to streaming rather than constantly pushing back it’s release date.

4. Deadpool 3 taps Bob’s Burgers veterans Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin

For the past month, Ryan Reynolds’ and the studio have been holding writers’ meetings to determine who would pen Deadpool 3. It appears that they found the perfect fit with the Molyneux sisters. It will be the first Deadpool film where Kevin Fiege and Marvel Studios will work closely with Team Deadpool. The third installment is in the early stages of development and does not currently have a director.

Opinion: Bob’s Burger is a wildly popular show so I’m interested in what the sisters can produce. With Ryan Reynold’s being so involved in the process all I can say is “In Ryan We Trust.”

5. Creed 2 Director to helm the next Transformers film

Steven Caple Jr. will direct the next film in the Transformers franchise in a reinvented universe per Fandango. The franchise has seen some critical success when moving away from Michael Bay in the directors’ chair.

Opinion: Early Transformers was a guilty pleasure of mine but the films got progressively worse. 2018’s Bumblebee restored some faith in the franchise. I’m interested in what Caple Jr. can do with the property.
