SIFF 2022 | Discussion with James Morosini, Writer, Director, and Co-Star of "I Love My Dad"
The film I Love My Dad had its world premiere this year during SXSW, and the film came up in discussion both in our Curtain Raiser video for the festival and our Wrap Up discussion. ForReel writer Taylor Beaumont also wrote a review on it. And after all of our coverage, the film ended up winning the Audience Award for Narrative Feature at the festival.
Therefore, when the Seattle International Film Festival announced I Love My Dad as a late entry to the festival and that James Morosini would be in attendance, I had to arrange to speak with him in person about the project.
After all, with a premise as obscure as the one posed in I Love My Dad, it’s hard to not discuss the kind of experience James has crafted in this film. Filled with cringe comedy - the likes of which have often been compared to The Office - I Love My Dad challenges audiences to be empathetic to a scenario that might otherwise be wildly distasteful. The result is a surprisingly emotional film filled with great performances, including from Morosini.
The synopsis goes as follows: When his adult son blocks him on social media, Chuck (Patton Oswalt) creates a fake online profile and accidentally becomes his son’s internet girlfriend in this family drama/cringe comedy based on the filmmaker’s own true story.
In this in-person interview, James and I discuss his style of comedy in filmmaking and the differences between filming I Love My Dad and filming his debut feature film Threesomething. Plus, I learn how much of a cinephile James is as he lists his top ten films of all time.
