Box Office Recap: How To Train Your Dragon 3 Roars Back to Hold Off A Madea Family Funeral

In a neck and neck battle for the top spot at the box office this weekend How To Train Your Dragon 3 overcame an Friday deficit to maintain its #1 domestic spot with a $30 (-45%) million three day total. The last film in Tyler Perry’s “Madea” franchise brought in a respectable $27 million despite showing in roughly 1,800 fewer theaters than How To Train Your Dragon 3. Madea fell well short of the series high Madea Goes To Jail’s $41 million opening in 2009 but was in line with the series average of just over $26 million. Oscar winner Green Book also jumped into the top 5 thanks to a boost in theaters which saw it showing in more theaters than A Madea Family Funeral.

Here’s how the rest of the top 5 fared at the box office:

1. How To Train Your Dragon 3 | $30 million | $97.6 million

2. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral | $27 million

3. Alita: Battle Angel | $7 million | $72.7 million

4.The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part | $6.6 million | $91.6 million

5. Green Book | $4.7 million | $75.9 million

Next weekend, Captain Marvel arrives in theaters. While the studio projections seem to have steadied after a steep drop it will be interesting to see how the film fares with so much controversy surrounding it. Captain Marvel will be the #1 film at the box office next weekend but with the Brie Larson/Rotten Tomatoes controversies looming the numbers could also be largely disappointing.
