CAPSULE REVIEW: “The Adam Project” Is Relatable Enough To Succeed

9/12 ForReel Score | 3.5/5 Stars

Netflix is at it again. Another high profile action flick. Another A-List headlining actor at the forefront. Another piece of content to turn your brain off for. However, unlike Netflix’s other action hits 6 Underground (which also starred Reynolds) and Extraction (Chris Hemsworth), The Adam Project is just entertaining enough to make the film worth a watch - and maybe even a re-watch.

In The Adam Project, Adam Reed (Ryan Reynolds) travels back to the year 2022 where he teams up with his 12 year old self (Walker Scobell) to destroy a technology and save the future he came from. High speed chases, sharp witted sarcasm, and hilarity ensue.

Scobell in particular brilliantly pulls off the task of making the audience believe unequivocally that he is a younger version of his co-star Ryan Reynolds. The banter is quite entertaining between the two & keeps the audience entertained while the plot progresses. Speaking of the plot, The Adam Project isn't breaking any new ground in that department, but it's incredibly relatable. A line that resonated with me in the film was this: "It's easier to be mad than sad" - a line from future Adam in response to the death of their father. It’s a scene that can strike all the right heartstrings for those who have struggled with grief of loosing a loved one.

The special effects are on par with big budget blockbusters and the easter eggs to other sci-fi films are numerous and enjoyable to spot. The Adam Project is saved by surprisingly emotional tones and the chemistry of Reynolds and Scobell. It’s popcorn entertainment and I’m there for it.
