Episodic Review: A Menacing Mark Duplass Makes "The Creep Tapes" A Worthwhile Series

9/12 ForReel Score | 4/5 Stars

The Creep Tapes is a risky and unorthodox journey inside the mind of a serial killer. Created by the same producers and directors from the original Creep films on Netflix, this TV show is an expansion of this world and dives into how human psychology can be so manipulative, making the show a bag full of surprises.

The Creep Tapes is an extension of the Creep story while we wait for the third entry to the series, and this show is structured around a collection of mysterious videotapes that were shown between Creep and Creep 2, each revealing individual stories with different characters. The episodes are well structured, but at the same time, can feel a little aimless while we navigate through episode 3 and beyond.

While the anthology format allows the storytelling ample opportunity for creativity, Mark Duplass's brilliant performance as a guy who can‘t control his desires and has issues between himself sets this series apart. This character makes the whole series worth watching.

The Creep Tapes doesn’t resolve all important questions, but the show manages to deliver one important detail that has been lingering since the first Creep movie regarding why he likes to kill and who is pulling his strings. That final episode sets a whole new benchmark for the franchise and intensifies why we love this character full of flaws and charisma, all reinforcing why Mark Duplass is so compelling in the role.

The Creep Tapes could be beneficial for the fans who are eagerly awaiting a third Creep movie. And even for newcomers, the show delivers some entertaining qualities despite some minor drawbacks. It‘s a wild ride that you hop on.
