Movie Review: "You, Me & Tuscany"; A Whirlwind Romance Of Predictable Proportions

Imagine Eat Pray Love meets every other romantic comedy of the past few years; the romantic qualities of Italy — the food, wine, culture — combined with the formatted storyline of recent years’ romance films and audience’s are presented You, Me & Tuscany. As the film unfolds, its characters are presented with new challenges and love in strange places that bring us all to the final results. Predictable, and at times cringe, You, Me & Tuscany is appealing yet repetitive and recognizable.

Pretend you have not yet read the log line of the film and you truly have no clue what you are about to watch - all you know is that an American girl will travel to Italy on a whirlwind romance. That is how I walked into my screening of You, Me & Tuscany. The film begins and the first thing we get to see is 2000s style slide-show transitions and split screens. It’s a bit jarring at first, but it becomes easy to get used to. Then, as the music is overbearing, and the plot unfolds, it becomes easier to see the path laid out in front of you — or, in front of the protagonist.

Anna (Halle Bailey) is a lost soul. After dropping out of culinary school with her mom’s passing, she currently works as a house sitter. One night at a hotel bar, she meets real-estate agent Matteo (Lorenzo de Moor). On a whim, she decides to travel to Italy and squat in the abandoned Tuscan villa. Here, life is lead down a road she would have never expected. Meeting new people, lies and love lead her on an adventure. Things get even more complicated too when she meets the homeowner’s cousin, Michael (Regé-Jean Page).

It is all for sure quite fairytale-esque, just as we hear Anna say multiple times throughout the film. Everything happens so fast, and all on this huge whim. From meeting a stranger in a hotel bar to meeting his Italian family, Anna is not given a moment to breath, and neither is the audience. As much as we want to see something original in You, Me & Tuscany, the enemies-to-lovers plot is exposed far too sudden. Yet, I still cannot help but fall for the twists along the way. They may not be surprising for everyone, but for those of us who just want to enjoy a silly rom-com, You, Me & Tuscany is perfect for that.

Thank goodness for Bailey and Page. Without them, there would be nothing there in You, Me & Tuscany. As the protagonist and possible love interest of the film, they both not only require their own charm, but a connection between each other as actors. We all know Bailey from the failed attempt at a live action Little Mermaid movie, none of which being her fault. But in this film, Bailey brings that same innocence she had as Ariel. She truly embodies that lost girl - one who cannot seem to find herself, even if she may be amidst adulthood. As a female viewer, this is somehow comforting. In a sense when you know how it feels to not know who you are or where you belong, seeing it on the screen, even in this way, is refreshing. Bringing it together is Page and his manliness. Funny to say, but he is presented here as a brute. Yet, he is a kind man at heart. When Michael and Anna connect, there is an instance of: here is the interruption that comes their way.

It becomes hard not to be thankful for Bailey and Page, especially when you spend the rest of the film (or a fair chunk of it) wondering what on earth the music and soundtrack choices are. I do not believe I have ever sat through the entirety of a film and counted the times where the song that came on simply pulled me out of it. Normally the score, or soundtrack, brings you deeper into the film and its environment. Yet somehow, as You, Me & Tuscany unfolds, every single song — apart from one key to the characters — has me questioning why.

Is You, Me & Tuscany a good film? That answer would depend on the audience. For someone who simply wants to be swept up into someone else’s Eat Pray Love style romance, then yes. For someone who appreciates the craft of cinema and looks for more in film, then you will be left wanting more. Then, if you are like me and look forward to the non-diegetic sound in movies, you will be quite upset with what you are forced to listen to. However, all that being said, there is something there and it comes from Bailey, Page and their idea of family.

After its release in cinemas in the United States on April 10, 2026, people surely have mixed feelings on You, Me & Tuscany. While it will definitely be heading to streaming soon, if you are interested in a new-ish love story, head to the cinema where you can follow Anna along her crazy journey to Italy.
