Now Attending: The 2022 Vancouver International Film Festival
After a long year of film and film festival coverage, we find ourselves once again at the Vancouver International Film Festival. Once again, the festival - based in the city that two of our writers call home - has programmed an impressive selection of films, talks, and events for attendees.
VIFF 2022 will take place September 29 - October 9 in-person, with around 130 feature films and 100 short films screening across seven venues in Vancouver. In the second half of the festival, VIFF Connect will host select films on that virtual platform.
The festival’s feature film categories are Special Presentations, Showcase, Panorama, Vangaurd, Northern Lights, Insights, Spectrum, Portraits, and Altered States. Internationally buzzed about films that are a part of this year’s lineup include The Whale, Triangle of Sadness, The Banshees of Inisherin, Call Jane, The Son, Decision to Leave, Empire of Light, and Women Talking. And of course, Canadian film is also well represented with powerful features like North of Normal, Riceboy Sleeps, Black Ice, and the World Premiere of The Grizzlie Truth programmed among many other Canadian films.
The opening night film will be Marie Clements’ Bones of Crows, and the closing night film is Broker from Hirokazu Kore-eda.
In this curtain raiser video, Todd Pengelly and I discuss which movies we’re looking forward to seeing during VIFF. You can find the films we discuss below, as well as the time stamps.
And of course, we are also excited to meet up and watch films with our Pacific Northwest friends. Friends of ForReel who will also be covering VIFF this year include Simon Best and Matthew Simpson from Awesome Friday, Leanne McClaren from Move 103.5 Vancouver, Christopher Cross from Tilt Magazine, Dakota Arsenault from Contra Zoom Podcast, and Taylor Baker from Drink In The Movies.
