"United Skates" Movie Review

12 out of 12

Adult night is the name of the nights depicted in United Skates when African American skaters flock to hit the skating rink. With spins, jumps, flips, maneuvers, and slide tricks, the skill of roller skating is elevated to a new level by these black communities across the country.

It’s a film that puts a spotlight on the struggling culture of roller skating. Struggling, not due to a lack of enthusiasm for the activity, but because of the lack of support for it from society as a whole. The documentary travels across the country to tell the stories of skaters and skate rink owners who’ve made skating their life, but have less opportunity to do what they love as rinks close.

The film generates awareness for many topics that fall under the skating domain: the struggling skate industry, prejudice and discrimination within communities, the suppressed voice of African American people, and the hot skate culture they created to express themselves.

From beginning to end, there’s a clear and unanimous message about the freedom skating gives to black people as individuals and the black community that urban skate rinks serve…lending extra validity to the “united” part of the film’s title.
