ForReel Box Office Summary - The Meg devours the box office with monster $44.5 million opening

A week after nearly every major release failed to reach studio expectations - this weekend featured major releases that not only met expectations but The Meg doubled its $20-22 million projection with an incredible $44.5 million opening weekend.

BlackkKlansman also slightly outpaced studio projections of $9-10 million and Mission Impossible 6 continues to show its legs at the box office.

Here's how the top 5 broke down:

1. The Meg | $44.5 million

2. Mission Impossible: Fallout | $20 million | $161.9 million

3.  Christopher Robin | $12.4 million | $50 million

4. Slender Man | $11.3 million

5. BlackkKlansman | $10.8 million

Looking forward - there are 3 major releases coming next weekend: Crazy Rich Asians, the romantic comedy widely hailed by critics so far. Alpha - a prehistoric story involving a young boy and mans best friend and finally, Mile 22 the Mark Wahlberg/Peter Berg military action film.

Our question for you is this: August is typically a dumping ground for movies from studios - with the success of The Meg - do you think studios should try to release more blockbuster films in August?
