"Pick of the Litter" Movie Review

11 out of 12

In the movie Pick of the Litter when five puppies are born to be Guide Dogs for the Blind (abbreviated GDB), each puppy faces one of three fates: get successfully trained and paired with a blind owner, become breeding dogs, or get “career changed”, ending their training in the GDB program. This movie follows them during their two year program to see which ones can complete it.

Pick of the Litter tries to convey how much time and effort it takes across multiple parties to train a dog to potentially be a successful GDB, and generally succeeds in demonstrating the raw emotion involved with training and loving a puppy until it’s passed on to the next stage of training.

Although the film’s narrative spoils how many pups make it though training too early, plenty of oohing and awing can still be done over how adorable they are as audiences indulge the urge to root for these puppies’ success. After all, Pick of the Litter is a documentary worth cheering about. And if you love dogs as much as the dedicated people in this film, you might consider career changing yourself…to GDB dog trainer.
