VIFF 2018 | "Giant Little Ones" Movie Review

Coming of age is tough. And when all it takes is one event for everyone’s perception of a person to change, it can make life unbearable.

That’s the scenario Franky encounters in Giant Little Ones when people are told that he sexually advanced on his best friend, Ballas, after a night of birthday celebrating. Yes, a mutual encounter happens between the two teens, but the story is contorted by Ballas to clear any question of his sexuality. The ensuing conflict forces Franky to learn how to be comfortable with himself, regardless of what others think.

But there are many stories in play. While Franky is the focus of the film, he’s surrounded by supporting characters with their own compelling stories, like the father who fell in love with another man whom he leaves his wife for, or the girl who is sexually assaulted, then labeled a whore by peers.

These and other characters, portrayed by a extraordinarily talented cast, all have something to teach Franky. “Pay attention to who you’re drawn to. Don’t worry about what to call it,” Franky’s dad explains. That’s why I won’t label Giant Little Ones a gay film, but I will label it a great film.
