"The Nun" Movie Review

The Nun opens with a pair of nuns in front of a door that says "God Ends Here." Following a frightening ordeal that claims one's life, the other races to a window, places a noose around her neck, and jumps to her death.

Eventually, I began wishing I was at the end of that noose.

It's clear the goal of The Nun was to bromidically recreate scenes featuring the mysterious demon from The Conjuring 2. The inverting of crosses, the shadow walking across the wall, the shrouded nun face....it's all rehashed in the most uninspired way possible.

I wasn't captivated. I wasn't entertained...I wasn't even slightly intrigued. I was just bored. And the disappointing thing is that The Nun had so much potential. How the demon plugs into The Conjuring universe is sound. The imagery is intrinsically artistic. And Taissa Farmiga, sister of franchise star Vera Farmiga, demonstrates that she can belong to this universe too.

But watching The Nun waste its premise over lazy writing isn't fun. Midway through the film, not-so-key character Father Bruke is asked by a nun figure, "what is it that concerns you?" My answer: that this movie can't end soon enough.
