"The Meg" Movie Review
When you see Jason Statham's name headlining an action film, you can bet it's going to be fairly ridiculous. And, as the premise of The Meg suggests, this film does very little to upset that standard.
That premise, by the way, features the discovery of a new level to the deepest part of the ocean floor and the inadvertent exposure of giant prehistoric sharks to wreak havoc in waters off the Asian coast. Add Statham, and you get the idea of what you're walking into.
The team Statham is saddled with to defeat this giant threat is, for the most part, uninteresting. Even Statham's love interest gets herself into too many situations she thinks she can handle, just to realize she needs the hunky American star to save her. And while a few surprises might catch audiences off guard, The Meg is largely devoid of the authentic suspense any proper shark film deserves.
Despite all of this, however, The Meg does its job as an action film, almost literally throwing sharks at everyone to fend off. After all, no one does a shark showdown like Statham, and while The Meg is no Jaws, it can at times be jaw dropping.
